La Costeña

La Costeña

La Costeña is a company that not many UK consumers will have come across. The business was started in 1923 when Don Vicente López Resines acquired a grocery store called La Costeña and started preparing serrano chilies and largo chilies in vinegar, which he sold in 20 kg cans. The business grew over the years and by 1948 they ha a production plant near Mexico City of over 5,000 square meters.

The business expanded and in 1975 moved to Ecatepec and in 2006 they opened their first plant in the USA to help service the US market, they now produce over 300 products exporting Mexican products around the world.

In the UK they have a distributor called Mextrade Ltd, run by Luis Iglesias, he has sent us a box of products to review, including Salsa Mexicana Casera which we are reviewing today. In the USA Salsa has overtaken Tomato Ketchup sales making it the most popular condiment.

The Salsa comes in a 250g screw top jar, the label is currenlty just is in Spanish, we hope his will be changed for the UK, The Salsa is make up of mostly made up of a red sauce with some seeds and red and green pieces of pepper floating in it. On opening the jar the smell is of pepper and onions.

You will see from the ingredienst list that Tomatillo’s are the main ingredient, they are part of the same family as the Chilli, Tomato, Potato and aubergine (Solanaceae). In Mexico they are known as the green tomato, Tomatillos are grown well in the UK and are well worth growing if you are looking for a interesting new ingredient to work with.

Ingredients: Tomatillo, Jalapeno Chilli, Onion, Coriander (AKA Cilantro), Salt, Modified Corn Starch, Vinegar, Potassium Sorbate.

The Salsa has a great peppery taste with a good kick of chilli in the back of the throat, it is making my mouth water as I eat it, I will have to get some nachos and grated cheese if there is any left. This is the style of Salsa I remember from my time working is California.
