We get all sorts of Chilli products in for review, but if ever a product matched it’s name, it would be this one! Chilli? – yes, Chocolate? – very much so, Crunchy? yes again. South Devon Chilli Farm have just released their Chilli Chocolate Crunchy Cake to the masses. These guys have been working on this for a while and I believe it is the first of a range which will have different heat levels.

Now everyone knows that Chilli and Chocolate go together like peaches and cream, but have the guys at SDCF got this right? well we will see. The bar comes in a paperbag with a section of clear plastic so you can see the cake sitting within. The description say’s “Handmade in Devon” which is also nice to see the product still being produced locally. The packaging is clear and concise, not cluttered with a large sticker on the front containing all the information.

After taking the cake bar out of the packaging, it certainly feels substantial and at 95gms its a decent size. The bar has a thick chocolate topping which has a nice ripple design and contains the chilli. As it’s just chocolate topped, you can get a cross section of what else this bar contains. I can see what looks like rice snaps.

With all chocolate, I prefer to eat it straight out of the fridge to nicely harden it, so before tasting I put half in cold conditions and half left at ambient temperature.

Ingredients:

Biscuit (wheat flour, sugar, vegetable oil, invert sugar syrup, skimmed milk powder, raising agent {E500ii, E503ii}, salt), Chilli Chocolate topping (20%) (of which cocoa solids 60% minimum, sugar, emulsifier: soya lecithin, flavouring: natural vanilla), margarine (vegetable oil, water, salt, natural flavouring), golden syrup, chocolate chips (6%) (sugar, cocoa solids {40% min}, emulsifier: soya lecithin, flavouring: natural vanilla), crisp rice (rice flour, sugar, malt extract, vegetable oil, soya lecithin).

Once chilled for about half an hour I decide to tuck in, the Chocolate topping is very substantial and is very satisfying to bite through to reach the lower section which is nice and chewy and sweet, the golden syrup flavour very evident and the whole thing takes me back to my younger years making rice crispy cakes although this is certainly the luxury end of that spectrum!

The piece I left at room temperature still has the crunch and bite. The Chilli is there and is very mild, just enough to let your mouth know it’s present but not enough to cause anyone any sort of uncomfortable moments!. As mentioned earlier I believe the plan is to release this mild version, and then make others using increasingly hotter chilli which will be fantastic.

So to summarise, I have to say, I’m not a big “cake” eater but this is really nice, I love the flavour and texture of this bar, it ticks all the boxes for me and with hotter versions coming, that can only be a good thing!
