Simpson's Seeds - Horny GoatI have know Matt and his family at Simpson’s Seeds for a long time, Matt is a well know expert at growing chillies and they supply gardening enthusiasts with an impressive range of Chillies, Tomatoes and other Vegetable seeds and plants from there nursery in The Walled Garden Nursury that is part of the Longleat Estate in Horningsham.

As part of the seed production process they de-seed the chillies leaving them with a lot of chilli flesh, ideal for production of chilli sauces, this sauces is based on their Goat Horn Chilli, which they describe High Yielding chilli with a  mild to medium heat, it is a member of the Caspicum Annuum species and produces dark green pods  up to about 15cm long and 1cm diameter that ripen to a bright red.

The sauce is a dark reddish orange colour and on cracking the lid it smells lightly of garlic and cider vinegar, the initial taste is from the black pepper which is nicely sweetened by the fruit juice and honey, the honey leaving a slight stickyness on the lips. The heat is on the mild side but the flavour is a complete delight, if like me you are a fan of black pepper, this one is a winner, let hope he can make this a regular product.

Ingredients: Cider Vinegar, Fruit Juice, Onion, Sugar, Sweet Peppers, Honey, Goat Horn Chillies (9%) Garlic, Smoked Cayenne Powder, Black pepper, Salt, Dried Herbs.

Bottle kindly provided by Simpsons Seeds

Now all of Matt’s sauces are limited editions, but you should be able to pick up a bottle at the nursery (Check the web site for opening times) or at the many events that Simpsons have a stall while stocks last. I would also recommend you take a look at the Simpson’s web site where you can pick up a copy of Matt’s excellent book Chilli, Chili, Chile or even his Tomato Book
