For the past month I have been on a detox diet, that for me has meant eating a lot of houmous and crudities, so I have become a bit of an expert on making and tasting houmous.

Tesco's Extreme Chilli Houmous

I was almost excited when Sonia returned from a trip to Tescos with this extreme houmous, I have eaten a lot of their Sweet Chilli Houmous as well as the Jalapeno and Red Pepper versions, but most often I have been eating the organic and adding my own chilli sauce to it which works very well.

Ingredients: Cooked Chickpeas (48%), Vegetable Oil, Red Chilli Puree (12%), Water, Sesame Seed Paste, Jalapeno Chilli (Jalapeño Chilli, Water, Salt, Vegetable Oil, Bay Leaf, Cinnamon, Clove), Concentrated Lemon Juice, Cayenne Pepper, Salt, garlic.

We need to remember that one man’s extreme is more often another mild when it comes to chillies and while this had an excellent flavour and a little warmth, I think extreme may have been a mistake, I think  the Tesco’s hot salsa would be hotter than this (and that is pretty mild as well), what they have got right is the overall flavour which was a pleasure (I am on a diet). I did not get any hint of the Jalapeño or the Cayenne mentioned in the ingredients, but they are well down the ingredients list.

I do however think that Tescos should just call this “Chilli Houmous”. As for the diet, it is working very well so far I have lost 14 lbs in 4 weeks and while not enjoying every detox meal, I have used it to helped me increase my chilli sauce intake (Some of the food has been very bland)..

So this helped you lose weight as a snack and/or just adding to your meal? Would you say it’s a healthy snack?

This was just part of the diet, it was good to have a bit of extra flavour, plan houmous can get a bit boring.
