A while ago Sea Spring Seeds sent us in a picture of a Dorset Naga Plant with a question How many chillies are there on this Dorset Naga plant ?” if you guessed the closest you could win…

Sea Spring Seeds - Dorset Naga

Sea Spring Seeds - Dorset Naga

The answer was an amazing 781 Chillies

The Dorset Naga plant was sown mid January. From April onwards it was kept in an unheated polytunnel, where apart from a larger pot, it was not treated in any special way. On 12th November all the chillies were picked off the plant, the numbers were:

  •  651 red fruit (1.995 kg)
  • 130 green fruit (0.195 kg)

Total: 781 chillies, weighing 2.090 kg.

The winning guess was 869 by Carl Brooks, but most underestimated the number of pods

  • Nearly everyone (97.3%) underestimated the number of chillies on the plant.
  • Guesses ranged from 25 (the lowest), to 3450 (the highest).
  • The most popular numbers guessed were 150 and 237 – five people guessed each of these numbers.
  • Two thirds (67.7%) of the contestants guessed between 100 and 299.

So this year why not count the number of chillies on one of your plants and see if you can beat this unofficial record.
