Hot-Headz - Smokey Chipotle Chile Con Queso

Hey hey chilli padawanz!! Its February already and the weathers getting warmer, soon be barbeque time again…right?? Hmm..maybe not but still, it is getting warmer.. I’m not entirely sure where I was going with that? ANYWAY! Today I have a BRAND NEW product that was just released by recently, its a new sauce in their Queso range, I suspect there may well be third in the future but for now lets concentrate on the newest member of the queso family! (is it just me or does “The Queso Family” sound like a mafia family??)

Soooooooooooooo as I hope you, dear reader, are aware, I have reviewed a Queso fom Hot-Headz before.. but this one strikes a little closer to home, and in a massively good and tasty way! I’m sure you’ve read before how much I LOVE cheese, right? and probably read many times about how much I LOVE chipotle? (BTW thats “Chee-pot(e)-lay” say it any other way and I will come to smite you 🙂 ok? good!) Well Stu over at Hot-Headz only went and decided that his next sauce was going to be the lovechild of cheese AND chipotle in one jar!!! Yes, you heard it here first, if a block of cheese and a chipotle had sex, this would be their offspring, and this child is named, quite simply “Smoky Chipotle Chile Con Queso”..actually thats quite a mouthful..but a nice mouthful nonetheless!!

Ingredients: Water, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Whey, Cheese (Pasteurized Milk, Salt, Cheese Culture, Enzymes) 8%, Red Bell Peppers, Tomato Paste, Sodium Phosphate, Green Bell Peppers, Less than 2% Salt, Lactic Acid, Modified Food Starch, Jalapeno Peppers (Jalapeno Peppers, Water, Vinegar, Salt, Calcium Chloride, and less than 1% Sodium Benzoate), Chipotle Peppers 0.6%, Vinegar, Guar Gum, Dehydrated Onions, Nacho Seasoning (Chili Peppers, Spices, Dehydrated Onion and Garlic, Paprika, Natural Flavor, Maltodextrin), Annatto Color, Smoke Flavor, Chili Peppers 0.1%, Artificial Flavor, Sorbic Acid (as a preservative), Xanthan Gum, Garlic Powder. CONTAINS: Milk, Soy.

Review jar kindly supplied by Stu over at

The jar is the same as the “Habanero chile con Queso” but the label is a little different, namely this one fits in more with the recent rebrand than the habanero version! I had concerns when I first received this product that this would simply be a smoky rehash of the habanero sauce, but after reading the label and seeing there wasn’t a hab in sight, coupled with the fact that hot-headz rarely disappoint, I twisted off the lid and sniffed the sauce, noting that this even *smells* different to the habanero version, it was at that point I knew Stu had done the chilli community proud in the UK once again!

The sauce itself is a very similar colour to the Hab version, but with notably less coloured chunks of chilli in it, the consistency was very similar too, but as with all hot-headz products, the proof is in the pudding.. or sauce in this case! I hastily grabbed a teaspoon and dipped it into the jar, lifting out a nice heap of sauce I placed it into my mouth and let it sit for a few seconds, feeling it slowly drip off the edges of my tongue, the flavour eminating throughout. I was expecting a largish dose of heat, similar to the Habanero version, but this wasn’t first I thought it might be a builder, so I grabbed another couple of spoonfuls expecting the heat to hit me in a wave, but it never did, a lovely tingly warmth was present though.

For once i am GLAD this doesn’t have a large punch of heat as I sincerely believe that would detract from the AMAZING chipotle flavour that this sauce holds, its cheesey but in a really good way, the Jalapeno heat and smokiness from the Chiptole gives it that much needed OOMPH that alot of mainstream “hot” dips and cheese sauces are severely lacking.

I know that a certain brand of dip is about £2 for 300G and tastes dirty and manufactured..this queso tastes divine and is a mere £3.49 for 454G! from so you are getting a better dip, with an extrat 150G for only £1.50 more, that is a fookin bargain if you ask me, hell I know where I’ll be going for my party food in future!!

I would use this stuff as a dip, poured over tortilla chips and topped with jalapenos and even as the topping for a cracking mexican style lasagna, buy a jar of this and a couple bags of Hot-headz own chips and you have a PARTAY! fact the possibilites for a product this versatile are pretty endless!

Right, until next time my chilli padawanz, may the sauce be with you, always!!!
