The Prince of Wales in Stow Maries

The Prince of Wales in Stow Maries

The Prince of Wales in Stow Maries, Essex held its first Chilli Festival over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

The Prince of Wales is a very popular real ale pub, on the road out towards Maldon in Essex.

The pub’s interest in chillies has been sparked by the enthusiasm of their regulars who have been holding competitions between themselves as to who could grow the most impressive chillies, cook the spiciest sausage rolls, and so on.

The event was supported by Fenn Creek Chillies, a local grower who sell Chilli plants at local farmers’ markets, while the pub’s menu featured a number of freshly cooked chilli based dishes. Fenn Creek were the only exhibitors, but the event was so successful the intention is to hold the event annually, and to invite sauce makers and sellers to future events.

I attended with some friends at lunchtime on Bank Holiday Monday and while I wimped out of the ‘Naga cooked fresh Mackerel’ I did enjoy an excellent Cod & Chips and some fine ales. I also left with three very healthy, exotic chilli plants (Black Naga (grown from seeds from Chilli Pepper Pete), a 7Pod and a Trinidad Scorpion).

Fenn Creek Chillies will be attending the Chilli Pepper Festival at the RHS Hyde Hall Gardens on the weekend of September 17th and 18th.
