Frosts Garden Centres - Chill Festival

Frosts Garden Centres - Chill Festival

On Saturday 27th August 2011, Sinful Sauces we invited to attend the second annual Chilli festival hosted by Frosts Garden Centre, Woburn Sands, Buckinghamshire.

Frosts Garden Centres have a focus on growing chilli plants and offer extensive advice in caring for them and growing them from seed (they have over 30 home grown chilli varieties and hundreds of plants on display to admire and buy). In many respects their festival is for ‘chilli beginners ’ or the curious, and this is further aided by the fact it’s absolutely free to attend! The event affords people with a passing interest the chance to learn about chillies, either from the growing aspect, using them in cooking or simply enjoying them.

As a large Garden Centre, Frosts also offer a vast range of products, some of which you might not find at standard chilli festival such as floral displays incorporating chillies and the materials needed to grow chillies yourself from seeds through to planters.

As part of the 3 day festival, Frosts had organised a large variety of entertainment including ‘Mariachi el Mexicano’, a live Mexican band (as featured on Big Brother!), Chilli inspired food, cooking demonstrations, Pimientos de Padron (considered a form of culinary Russian roulette, with approximately 1 in every 10 chilli consumed being very hot!) and even a petting stall containing micro pigs (a hit with the children and our personal favourite too!).

There were lots of people arriving from 10am onwards and there was a real social and upbeat atmosphere surrounding the event. We had a lot of people come over and see our stall which gave us the opportunity to chat about who we are, what we do and most importantly – chillies!

At one stage, our gazebo suffered at the hands of weather gods however, the staff were on hand to quickly relocate us inside the garden centre. We were amazed at how quickly they were able to move all of our stock and display into a safer, drier location inside! This proved to be extremely useful as the heavens opened and the British summer gave it’s all with a torrent of rain in the late afternoon. Thankfully, this didn’t affect the chilli party one bit.

We’d definitely recommend a visit to next year’s Chilli festival at Frosts, as there is plenty to do and see for all the family, especially if you have a keen interest in growing your own. The best bit is, it’s absolutely free!

Many thanks to Matt, Simon, Gabby & the team at Frosts for making our visit special.
