I little while ago  we reviewed a Hot Chilli & Carrot Chutney from The Cherry Tree, after that we had an email from Phil Jones who has a franchise in the Chilterns, he recommended we review their Scorcher Cheddar, and a week later we got two packs in the post.

The Cherry Tree -Scorcher Cheddar

The Cherry Tree -Scorcher Cheddar

This kind of cheese is made by chopping up cheddar and mixing it with the other ingredients and then reforming it back into a block of cheese. You can see if you look carefully you can see this in the texture of the cheese.

This cheese has lots of red pieces of chilli flesh in it, and there is also the odd  piece of green jalapeño, the texture of the cheese is not as firm as a piece of unprocessed cheddar (as you would expect now you know how it is made), but when you bite into a piece the cheddar flavour is very good, but as you start the enjoy the cheese you wake up the chillies. I did not expect this cheese to be very hot, but I think it is the hottest I have tried to date.

Ingredients: Pasteurised Full Fat Milk, Starter Culture, Vegetarian Rennet, Salt, Dried Chilli Flakes, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Dried Jalapeños.

Packs kindly provided by The Cherry Tree Chilterns

Overall I think this is one of the best tasting chilli cheeses I have tried, and as they are all made the same way, this has to be down to the quality of the basic ingredients used. This cheese has some heat and flavour that other just don’t always have, it is not the level the heat of a hot sauce or a fresh extreme chilli. It does makes the magnificent cheese toasties, or how about stuffing a chicken breast with it…

The label could do with a larger font size, I had to get a magnifying glass to read it all, but that is no excuse not to buy a pack and give it a try and at approx £2.90 for 200g it is not going to break the bank. They also do 2 kg and 4 kg

We found this one at the Marlborough High Street market on a Saturday. Looks like it is only sold at markets and festival stalls. Enjoy!

Bought 3 types of cheese from this provider, The chilli cheese, garlic cheese and onion cheese.

I bought these at gunwharf quay’s food festival, and have enjoyed all of them. I am wondering where I can buy these on a permenant basis?
