Hot Rhubarb and Chilli

Hot Rhubarb and Chilli

While visiting the Sherbourne Castle Country Fair I picked up a number of new products,  including this one. I got it from the The Cherry Tree stall, but oddly for them the jar has no information on it about who made it.

We grow rhubarb at home, but have not put it with chillies except when making a chutney that includes rhubarb, but this product looks more like a jelly.

On opening, you can smell the chillies, the jelly is very very thick and sticky, but it is not clear like a jelly, it is so thick it is hard to spoon out of the jar.

The flavour starts to show its rhubarb heritage, while cooked rhubarb is not a strong flavour it works well  and enhances the other ingredients, and it works well with chillies. The heat is mild and gentle, but the stickiness make it stick to the teeth like chewed toffee (Yummie).

Ingredients:  Sugar, Rhubarb (19%), Chillies (19%), Spiced Vinegar (Malt Vinegar (From Barley), Salt, Colour: Caramel, Spice Extracts), Onions, Garlic, Lemon Juice (from Concentrate), Salt.

This would make a great glaze on roast lamb or ribs, but only add at the last few minutes of cooking as the high sugar levels would mean it could burn. Best to warm it first as it is so sticky it would be hard to spread.

I picked this up for £2.75 if memory serves me well, and while it won’t be spread on a sandwich, it will be used up very quickly, I can see some rib roasting soon, the 300g jar is a generous and should give me a chance to experiment.

A better label “Who made it, Where can I get more, Some usage ideas” would have given it a better score.

I bought this recently with some hot cheese, and it is delicious, it’s from a company called the Mixing Bowl, they have a website but at £6 per delivery it is quite expensive, I hope this helps.
