Peter Seymour (AKA ChilliPepperPete) has come across a new Chilli variety that grows wild in China. he has sent some away for Scoville testing and it came back at 644,034 SHU’s

Shabu Shabu from China

The Shabu Shabu comes from the western edge of the Tengchong County where it borders the Myanmar (Burma), the chilli is not commercially cultivated but grows wild and is picked once a year for additional income for the local farmers.

Peter is investigating supplies of chillies from China, and has been offered ancho, pasilla, chipotles, cayenne and birdseye and is working on getting his Spanish Naga’s grown there as well.

It has been a while since we visited Simpsons Seeds, and yesterday they held their Day of Fire and Spice, it is a good chance to pick up some chilli plants and see what is happening at the nursery.

Simpsons sell a massive range of seeds, in their shop they have racks full of packs, and you can also pick up one of Matts books on Growing Chillies “Chilli, Chili, Chile: Peppers Sweet and Hot” or Tomato growing book ” The Tomato Book” both provide all you need to know about growing this in the UK.

Matt has given us 5 signed copies of  “Chilli, Chili, Chile: Peppers Sweet and Hot” to give away in next months competition.

The weather was a little changeable but there was a steady stream of visitors, including the Bristols Hottest Club – The Clifton Chilli Club.

Three other chilli companies had stands at the event with Deers Leap Chillies, The Upton Cheyney Chilli Company and The Bath Pig, and we have picked up some products from each to review over the next few months.

The Isle of Wight is to get it own Chilli Farm. The farm is being opened by  Lee and James Illman who run the successful Godshill Organics, an organic small holding and shop.

The Godshill Organic Farm Shop

The Godshill Organic Farm Shop

The farm will be based at the current Godshill Organics location but will not be completely organic and this would limit the varieties they could grow, this year they plan to grown around 30 varieties, and to increase this to 50 next year.

The Chillies will be grown in poly tunnels, with part of the new farm open to the public, the intend to sell the chill based products in their shop including beer, Chocolate and Ice Cream.

This makes the IOW a new holiday destination for Chilliheadz.

P.S. Sorry for the typo, now fixed..
