Tracklements Chilli Jam

Tracklements Chilli Jam

Tracklements has been around since the 1970’s when William Tullberg started making wholegrain English mustard, you have to remember at this time there was only Colman’s Yellow and Brown varieties in the shops, now they produce a massive range of products from their base in Malmesbury, Wiltshire.

Tracklements Chilli Jam won a Gold Award at the Great Taste Awards in 2010, the jam has pieces of Chilli, Pepper and Onion floating in a bright red sweet sauce, the smell is sweet with a slight vinegar over tone.

The taste comes initially from the peppers and onions before the warmth from the Chillies becomes evident, I was surprised I could taste the peppers, which I think shows how well balanced the jam is, while it does not a savoury taste, the salt content must be quite low, it reminds me of a sweet chilli sauce, but a bit more interesting with more depth to the flavour.

Ingredients:  Raw Cane Sugar, Red Chillies (19%), Red Peppers (19%), Vinegar, Onions, Garlic, Lemon Juice, Salt.

You can taste why this has won a Gold Taste Award, I would not buy this if I was looking for a macho big hit of chilli, but as a dip or used to glaze a gammon joint it would be superb.

At only £3.45 for a 250g jar it’s not bad value either.

This is great on a buttered, toasted muffin (preferably an all-butter muffin) with bacon & mature cheddar.

I started making these when I ran a B&B but still make them at home now. One of my favourite brunch foods.
