Lionel HitchenWe have been chasing around trying to find more information on the ban on Capsaicin as a food additive, I have just received an email from John Lee Technical Sales manager at Lionel Hitchen a UK manufacturer and supplier of Chilli Oleoresins.

The email  is as follows:-

Capsaicin occurs naturally in chillies and therefore it is present in our chilli extracts / oleoresins.

Our products are perfectly legal according to new EU flavourings legislation EU directive 1334/2008.

The status is defined in our specifications as flavouring preparations.

Hope this reassures you.

Many Regards

This looks like good news as most product use oleoresins and not pure Capsaicin crystals, we are also awaiting more news from the FSA (Food Standard Agency) who have been talking to Grim Reaper Foods.
