The Upton Cheyney Chilli Company - Mango, Lime, Red Habanero Hot Sauce

From the “ancient and historic” village of Upton Cheyney in the Cotswold Hills Alex and Louise grow chillies and make their own recipe hot sauces, a while ago we had a chance to visit them for the annual Upton Cheyney Chilli Festival which is a fun event held on the farm.

During my visit I picked up this bottle of sauce for review, and it has now made it way to the front of the review que… The sauce is a red/orange colour with a nice consistency so it pours gently from the bottle in to my teaspoon.

Ingredients: Mango, Onion, Sugar, Cider Vinegar, Red and Orange Habanero, Red Chilli, Garlic, Lime Juice, English Mustard.

Bottle kindly provided by The Upton Cheyney Chilli Company

The sauce has a  smell of ripe mango with just a hint of the cider vinegar and lime, the taste is like a warm summers day in a bottle. Starting with the sweet mango doing it magic on my tongue, then this is followed by a glowing warmth from the Habanero’s, this is a hot, but not blistering sauce, the combination of flavours is divine, and finally as the heat subsides in comes the lime juice.

I feel instantly transported back to that warm day in September and our visit to Upton Cheyney, now all I need to some grilled chicken  to pour it on and life is good.

Now back to a cold snowy day in December.. I like this sauce, I was expecting an over sweet concoction, but this not as sweet and sticky as the ingredients would indicate and for that I warmly applaud it, it provides a great flavours without losing the integrity of the ingredients (Coming over all Grand Designs for a moment then!).

At £4.00 a bottle on the web site, this is not bad value either, all the chillies that are in this come from the farm, so when it is gone, it gone – don’t miss out visit www.uptonchilli.co.uk.
