Mr Vikki’s – Max’s Ketchup

Mr Vikki’s – Max’s Ketchup

Mr Vikki’s sauces come from the beautiful Lake District, we have been WOW’ed by their product many time in the past, so I am looking forward to tasting this one. Proprietor and Pickle Guru Adam Marks describes themselves as a “ small bespoke Indian Fusion pickle producer “ and over the past few year they have won handfuls of awards for their products including 9 Gold’s at the 2008 Great taste awards and Best Extreme Chilli Sauce at the 2010 National Chilli Awards.

This sauces comes in a 250g traditional style square bottle, it has a slightly lighter red colour that the tomato sauce I feed my children (Heinz), with a few chilli seeds floating in the blend.

On opening the bottle there is a very deep smell of Tomatoes almost like a puree mixed with a little vinegar, the taste is amazing, I know why Max’s loves this ketchup, it combines a warmth with Tomato and spices an just a hint of celery on the back of my tongue, I think I could drink this with a straw, it is almost the ultimate tomato chilli smoothly.

Ingredients: Made with 160g Tomatoes per 100g, Sugar, Vinegar, Fresh Chillies, Garlic, Spices, Celery, Salt, Pepper.

Bottle supplied by Mr Vikki’s

This bottle will not last long, I am already half way down the bottle just writing this review, but luckily this is not a expensive at only £2.75 a bottle, a few of these will be on my Christmas list this year.. This sauce does leave me wondering ‘Who is Max’?

Dartmoor Chilli Farm – Beast of Dartmoor Chilli Sauce

Dartmoor Chilli Farm – Beast of Dartmoor Chilli Sauce

The Beast of Dartmoor is the Dartmoor Chilli Farm’s Bhut Jolokia hot sauce, who are based in the Dartmoor National Park, they farm Chillies naturally and holistically without the use of herbicides or pesticides and have recently won an award for their environmental responsibility from the FSB (Federation of Small Businesses).

The sauce is a light red colour with a smooth consistency, within the sauce you can see small flecks of the tomato and chillies, on opening the smell comes from the cider vinegar and tomatoes, the inital taste is from the tomatoes, cider vinegar and apples, but then the Bhut Jolokia kicks in. This is a well balanced sauce, the heat while extreme does not last long, and this sauce does not stop you enjoying what you are eating it with.

Ingredients: Tomato, Tomato Juice, Cider Vinegar, Bramley Apples, Red Peppers, Bhut Jolokia Chillies (8%), Lemon Juice, Citric Acid.

This sauce was kindly provided by the Dartmoor Chilli Farm

Another spoon full goes down well, its a cold day, but I am now feeling very upbeat and warm, I have tried of lot of Dartmoor Chilli Farm product and they are all made with great care and attention to the flavour and this one does not let the side down. This is great as a condiment, but would also work well added to cooking, a pasta sauce or chile would all taste better with this added.

We hope the Dartmoor Chilli Farm has success later in the year with it planning application, we would hate to lose such a good sauce maker from the UK market because they cannot grow the business.

Note: This sauces us suitable for Vegetarians and Vegan.
