Barbecue season has sadly come to a close, winter is drawing in, so it must be about time to pull out the chutneys and jams to get us through those winter months. A little chilli in a relish or jelly can make for a very warming accompaniment to a meal and is a great way to sneak a little chilli into dishes like Roasts that don’t usually see much spice!

Edible Ornamental’s Luscious Citrus Relish

Edible Ornamentals Lucious Citrus Relish

First up is Edible Ornamentals Luscious Citrus Relish. It’s good, but I’m initially a bit gutted as this would have gone GREAT with all those Barbecues that are now just distant meaty memories. I bet this stuff would liven up a smoky sausage or a burnt burger no problem. The ‘citrus’ is orange and lime, the other main ingredient here is red onion, the orange takes centre stage with the red onion, the two of them crying out to be splashed over a side of beef or Christmas dinner. This a sweet relish and probably looser than most, maybe not one for your cheese and crackers but certainly tasty and surprisingly hot.

Ingredients: Red Wine Vinegar, Sugar, Red Onions, Serenade Chillies, Oranges, Garlic, Horseradish, Limes.

Dartmoor Chilli Farm’s Thai Spiced Apple Chilli Jelly

Dartmoor Chilli Farm - Thai Spiced Apple Chilli Jelly

Dartmoor Chilli Farm’s Thai Spiced Apple Chilli Jelly is a sweet and set jelly. It’s full of apples so immediately I’m thinking this should go with roast pork, there’s more than just apples here, the ‘Thai’ elements are lemongrass, coriander and spring onions, they keep things interesting although I could probably do without the chunks of spring onion, I found them a little distracting. Not quite as hot as Edible Ornamentals Relish but a very distinct flavour and for only £2.00 a jar definitely worth a go if you’re looking for something a little bit different.

Ingredients: Bramley apples, sugar, lime, lemon grass, coriander, cherry bomb chillies.
