Dartmoor Chilli Farm - Dartmoor Real Ale Chilli Chutney

This ‘Dartmoor Real Ale and Chilli Chutney’ is from Phil and Kay at Dartmoor Chilli Farm, whose farm nestles in the beautiful National Park of Dartmoor. If you don’t know, Phil and Kay’s chilli farm is completely ‘off grid,’ so that means they rely on solar power at their farm.

Ok, onto what you all want to know about. The ingredients apart from the mixed spices, sugar and sultanas are either grown at their farm, or are sourced within a 20 mile radius of it.

Ingredients: Onions (grown on the  farm), Apples (grown locally), Sultanas, Spices, White Sugar, Dartmoor Real Ale 12%, Chillies (grown on the farm) 5%

When you open the jar, you get a very strong chutney smell, and you can detect the real ale before you have even tasted it.

The initial taste is from the real ale, then the coriander and mixed spices, with a warm chilli hit towards the end.

As I’m near Melton Mowbray, I did my taste test with some local cheeses and pork pie, and it complimented them perfectly, and did not overpower. You can certainly taste the chilli kick at the end, but it is more of a medium heat, and would also go well with cheese as a sandwich filling.

At £2.75 for a 227g jar, this is very good value, and is definitely recommended. The label is simply designed and appealing, although I understand from Phil & Kay that they will be redesigning their labels shortly.
