We live close to Sea Spring Seeds / Pepper By Post, but due to our hectic summer schedule we have never made it to their open day, but this year we packed the kids in the car and off we went, the only slight down side was the weather which just a little wet, with a sea mist rolling in.

Sea Spring Seeds / Pepper By Post can be found in the small hamlet of West Bexington, just off the coast road between Weymouth and Bridport, it is run by Michael and Joy Michaud from a very very extensive collection of Poly Tunnels and Green Houses in a field behind their home.

The Open Day was organised at the same time as another local business Tamarisk farm was also holding it’s own event, while access to the village was by a single track road, other drivers where most courteous and parking was well organised, we walked up the road from to the event and as we entered Micheal was talking to a group of visitor and introducing a Indian Cooking Demonstration.

Joy's Guided Tours

Joy's Guided Tours

Joy was running guided tours around the Poly Tunnels and Green houses answering questions as she went, she is a mine of information, after 20+ years working with chillies there will be few more expert than Joy and Michael.

The smaller green houses are used for growing chilli that will be used for seed collection. By using the small green houses they can control cross fertilisation and keep the varieties pure.

In the poly tunnels, the chillies are planted directly in the ground, in some of them they contained just one variety (lots of Dorest Naga’s), while other contained a number of varieties, you can see from the picture below some of the more interesting varieties we found, including the Bengle Naga and the Red Zinger which we mentioned in a previous article.

This open day will defiantly be on our list of don’t miss events next year, we hope to see your there.
