To cater for the increasing number of chilli aficionados who make the pilgrimage to Bedford’s specialist pick-your-own vegetable and chilli grower, Edible Ornamentals have announced the opening of The Edible Kitchen at their Cherwood Nurseries in Chawston.

The Edible Kitchen will be run by mother and daughter Jo and Jan Ball who are keen fans of cooking with really fresh ingredients. As well as liquid refreshments, Jo and Jan will prepare an intriguing range of home cooked snacks using seasonal vegetables which they will pick fresh off the plant each day. The choice of dishes will vary depending on what is at the peak of freshness but they will all be prepared using the chillies and other fresh vegetables, for which Edible Ornamentals is renowned.

Chilli expert Joanna Plumb commented, “When visitors call to pick their vegetables straight off the plants, they often ask us what other dishes we can suggest to tingle their tastebuds. We felt that rather than just give them a recipe, it would be much better if they could actually try them while they’re here, so the idea of The Edible Kitchen was born.”

Many vegetables start to lose their flavour soon after they’re picked, which is why there is a rapidly growing trend for discerning home cooks to use really fresh ingredients if they want to ensure the finished dishes have the very best flavour.

Joanna added, “As they have a long season and are very popular, Jalapeno Poppers will be a regular treat. They’re made with Jalapenos chillies which are stuffed with cream cheese and bacon and cooked to perfection, but we’ll also have more unusual goodies such as Courgette and Lavender cakes. We’ve tried them and they really are delicious.”

The Edible Kitchen will be open at weekends throughout the season and Jo and Jan will be delighted to reveal their culinary secrets to curious visitors.
