Nando's New Improved Sauces

Nando's New Improved Sauces

A few weeks ago I picked up a couple of bottles of New Improved Nando’s Peri-Peri BBQ Sauce and Peri-Peri Tomato Sauce in my local supermarket (Yes sometimes we have to purchase sauces), unfortunately I had not tried the previous version of these two products so I cannot tell how much they have improved.

Both of these products are rated by Nando’s as medium, they contain no artificial Colours, Preservatives, and MSG and both are suitable for vegetarians. (Did you know that the word vegetarian comes from the Latin “vegetus” meaning “lively”.

Now back to the sauces:-

Nando’s Peri-Peri BBQ Sauce

This is described on the bottle as “Take BBQ sauce. Blend with Nando’s Peri-Peri sauce. Beat chest. Lick lips. Tuck in”.

I have to say on opening the sauce does smell like BBQ with Lemon, which is one of the major flavour ingredients in Nando’s sauces I have tasted in the past. The Initial taste is very strongly of Lemon as well, with a tomato overtone followed by a hint of BBQ flavour, before the Lemon takes back over again.

There are a few seeds floating in the mix which is otherwise a smooth thick consistency.

Ingredients:- Sugar, Water, Tomato Paste, Malt Vinegar (from Barley), Spirit Vinegar, Soya Sauce (Water, Salt, Glucose, Soy Beans, Barley Malt Extract, Spirit Vinegar, Wheat Flour), Thickener (Modified Maize Starch), Vinegar, Onion, Lemon, Paprika, African Bird’s Eye Chilli (Peri-Peri Chilli), Vegetable Oil, Salt, Cayenne Pepper, Molasses, Smoke Flavouring, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Garlic, Stabiliser (Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum).

There is a little bit of heat that builds up in the back of the throat, but nothing to cause any concern to putting this sauce out with children present.

Nando’s Peri-Peri Tomato Sauce

This is described on the bottle as “Tomato sauce blended with Nando’s Peri-Peri sauce. Rocket science? No. Delicious? Yes.

Like the BBQ this again has a Lemon smell on opening, it is a lighter red colour, and the consistency you would expect from a Tomato sauce.

If anything this has an even more Lemon taste, and while not hot the warmth is now on my tongue , the Lemon is the flavour you expect from Nando’s sauces and this defiantly has Lemon coming over all the other flavours, I did not feel that the tomato flavour was strong enough, while not unpleasant this sauce is not a winner for me, if anything the Lemon is a little bitter and has had to be sweetened with to much Glucose-Fructose Syrup and sugar, the sweetness and flavour of the Tomatoes has been lost.

Ingredients: Water, Tomato Paste (15%), Glucose-Fructose Syrup, Sprit Vinegar, Sugar, Thickener (Modified Maze Starch), Vinegar, Salt, Onion, Lemon, African Bird’s Eye Chilli (Peri-Peri Chilli), Vegetable Oil, Garlic, Cayenne Pepper, Acidity Regulator (Citric Acid), Bay Leaf, Chilli Pepper, Paprika, Natural Flavouring, Stabiliser (Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum).

I love some of the Nando’s product range, and while the BBQ sauce, I can see myself using if I find it at a BBQ, the Tomato sauce is not better for the addition of the Nando’s magic.
