in General Information

What is Chili Powder – Chili Powder is a seasoning mix that comes from the USA, note the spelling of Chili, you need to be careful when purchasing this in the UK as we have at least three spelling that can confuse, it is not Chilli Powder or Chile Powder, both of which we will cover in later articles.

Chili Powder is a mix of different chilli varieties and with other herbs and spices it was commonly used in the early 1800’s in America’s mid west to spice up cheap meat to make it more palatable.

Today it is used in all number of recipes, but probably most often to make a Bowl of Chili.

  • 4-5 Chipotle Chillies
  • 2 Ancho Chillies
  • 2 Mulato Chillies
  • 2 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 2 tsp Dried Oregano
  • 1 tsp garlic Powder
  • ½ tsp Ground Cinnamon

Remove the stems from the chillies and dry fry to release the flavours, and leave to cool, do the same to the Cumin seeds, for about 30 seconds over a high heat until lightly toasted.

Deseed the chillies and place in a blender with the other ingredients and grind to a fine powder.

If you want it hotter, add hotter dried chillies, uses with minced beef or light coat meat before grilling or BBQ
