This recipe could not be simpler, it takes about 10 minutes to prepair the ingredients and only another 20-30 to cook.

Birds Eye and Banana Chutney

Birds Eye and Banana Chutney

I like using birds eye chillies as they are available almost everywhere, they have a good heat and flavour, giving  the chutney a good bite.

  • 1.5 kg Bag of  Banana’s
  • 10-15 Birds Eye Chillies
  • 400 ml Cider Vinegar
  • 50 g Fresh Ginger
  • 500 g Rasins
  • 500 g Dark Brown Muscovado Sugar

Peal and chop up the banana into small chunks and place in a large saucepan, then add about 50 g of fresh ginger pealed and finely chopped,  I cut my chillies into small rings and added them with the rest of the ingredients.

Stir well and then gently bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 minutes.

If needed use a potato masher to break up the banana’s and then simmer again for a final 10 minutes.

Remove from heat and bottle in clean sterilised jars, seal immediately.

Makes around 1.2 kg.

This is a great recipe that makes high quality chutney you just can’t buy in the shops.
Cheap too.
I put in pears and apples for half of the bananas.
I put the pears in as they can give a great aroma to a chutney
The apples were just surplus fruit (why not?)
White vinegar and white sugar will mask the other flavours a bit less – its up to you.
It makes for a very tasty chutney!
Wonderful with white meats or cheese
Put chunks of banana or pear in towards the end if you want it chunkier (cooking breaks the pieces down)
