Vivien Lloyd’s Tomato and Chilli Chutney

Vivien Lloyd is an award winning preserves maker with her preserves taking many first prizes at the Royal Welsh Show, she has also featured on the BBC and local radio.

I picked up this jar at one of my favourite Deli’s Bramble and Sage in Sutton Montis (http://www.brambleandsage.co.uk) they often have products I have not found on my regular shopping trips.

Ingredients: Tomatoes (28%), Vinegar, Chillies (14%), Sugar, Apples, Onions, Spice Extract, Salt.

The chutney comes in a 210g pot, on opening there is a sweet smell of tomatoes and chilli, the chutney is a finely chopped mixture with bits of chilli and the odd seed visible.

At first taste it reminds me of Cayenne with a bit of a peppery heat; it is not a sweet or overly vinegary, the tomato comes in as a secondary flavour, this is a real grown up chutney, lots of bite and lots of flavour, This would be a excellent choice with cold beef for mutton, it would soon over power delicate flavours of chicken or turkey.

Vivien she runs a number of masterclasses and for those who cannot attend, there are also some DVD’s of how to make some of her recipes, as a recognised expert in preserving for over 20 years, these sound like an excellent way of learning some of the art.
